Special Statewide Virtual Meeting Wednesday October 14: End of State Moratorium, Start of CDC with Clerk Magistrate Nickolas Moudios

    5:00 PM-6:45 PM
    10/14/2020

We’ll be having a round table (really, zoom) discussion/presentation about the end of the state eviction moratorium and the start of the CDC eviction moratorium. Our speaker will be the Central Division
Housing Court Clerk Magistrate Nickolas Moudios. (Note that the roundtable previously scheduled for this time slot has been replaced.)

This will be an in-depth update on the changes taking place at the housing court:

    • When can I file for cause?
    • How does the CDC moratorium impact filing for nonpayment?
    • Will there be a new affidavit related to the CDC moratorium?
    • When will my old case be heard?
    • When will my new case be heard?
    • What if I can’t do zoom?
    • How does the Governor’s announcement impact mediation and diversion?

Landlord-tenant attorneys and owners with rental agreement nonperformance: clear your schedules, this is an important update provided directly by court staff.

Attendees will be allowed to ask questions. The Clerk Magistrate will be giving procedural information, he will not be giving legal advice particular to your situation.

    We’ll be having a whole-room (zoom) discussion

Webinar Friday October 16: Ranked Choice Voting Ballot Question 2

    12:00 PM-1:00 PM
    10/16/2020

On the 2020 Massachusetts ballot being voted in October by mail and on November 3, voters will be asked to answer Question 2: should the state adopt a system known as “ranked-choice voting”. We will review the full text of the ballot question, what ranked choice voting would mean for Massachusetts, and what both supporters and detractors say about it.

We will then review several past elections and the outcome that occurred vs what might have happened differently if an alternative voting method had been used. We will look at both MassLandlords’ elections (which use non-traditional voting methods) as well as the elections that have changed the course of housing policy in Massachusetts.

Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how the eviction moratorium, rent control, rent cancellation, tenant opportunity to purchase, right to counsel, eviction sealing, and a Fair and Equal Housing Guarantee via surety bonds are all either helped or hindered by our current voting method or the alternative ranked choice voting.
