Statewide Virtual Meeting Mon Sep 27: Domestic Violence: How to Support Renters who are Survivors

    10:19 PM
    09/27/2021

This presentation will advise landlords on how to support survivors of domestic
violence, both current and prospective renters. According to the National Coalition
Against Domestic Violence, more than ten million men and women are physically
abused by their intimate partner each year in the US. We will cover this subject in-
depth with a focus on rental property operations:

    • Brief overview of domestic violence
      • What does it mean?
      • What are the impacts? How many of us are affected?
    • What signs indicate an intervention may be required?
    • What happens if a landlord doesn’t act?
    • What can and should a landlord do?
    • How can you support a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault?
    • Can you lock out one renter to protect another?

Domestic violence and sexual assault are never the survivor’s fault, but the survivor is
often the one who suffers the legal and housing consequences. Landlords may feel
the need to file a for-cause eviction
to keep the peace with neighboring residents.
This is far from the optimal course of action for all concerned.

Attendees will leave knowing how to discuss domestic violence with current and
prospective renters and which actions to take to ensure safe and healthy housing for
all residents. Even if you do not currently have a renter who is a survivor of domestic violence, this training will prepare you to recognize the signs and act when needed.

Part of this event will be presented by Amanda Mattingly. Amanda is the ICAPP Supervisor for the Domestic Violence Services (DVS) department at the YWCA of
Central Massachusetts. In her role supervising ICAPP, which stands for Intensive Co-
Assessment Planning Process, Amanda works with survivors of domestic and sexual
violence who are experiencing housing instability using a trauma informed social
justice lens and wellbeing orientation. In addition, Amanda works on the DVS
training team to train staff and community members on domestic violence, advocacy,
and vicarious trauma. Amanda also sits on the Worcester Domestic Violence High
Risk Team, the Housing Stability and Self-Sufficiency Sub-Committee of the
Governor’s Council to Address Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, and regularly
attends community meetings such as the Coordinated Community Response Network
(CCRN) and Continuum of Care (COC). The YWCA of Central MA serves most of
Worcester County and some of Middlesex County. Amanda’s presentation will be
relevant to landlords across the state, as all regions are served by similar programs.
