It’s inspiring that landlords like you are eager to contact United Way to voice your support for our initiative. This kind of grassroots support can make a difference!

If you will indulge us, here are our thoughts for how best to do this.

Emails or letters should be sent to

[addresses removed]
Nevermind! The United Way has requested that we not contact them!

Jeff Hayward, Chief of External Affairs at United Way MassBay, called MassLandlords on Monday, August 22 asking landlords not to contact United Way. Paraphrasing: Each proposal will be evaluated on its merits without regard to external votes.

Thank you to everyone who weighed in!

Although you should feel free to say whatever you believe would support the cause, we caution that the most effective messages are ones that don’t bash:

  • City, state or federal government programs;
  • The role of nonprofits like MBHP, RCAP and others in supporting stable tenancies;
  • The tenant rights movement, including specific initiatives like just cause eviction;
  • The liberal cause in general.

However truthful your views may be, expressing them here would not be useful for securing this grant.

Instead, anything that expresses your desire to increase lease ups with homeless families if this program is funded will be very helpful.

You could say other things like:

I am a landlord in Boston/Worcester, etc. My challenges in providing stable housing to homeless families have to do with issues such as: late rent payment, unauthorized occupants, property damage, and peaceful enjoyment. This program would make it easier for me to manage these tenancies for the following reasons. (X, Y and Z)

Some might say:

I have resisted renting to homeless families for the following reasons (X, Y and Z). If this program were offered, I plan to step forward and rent to homeless families. Please fund it.

Anything that states what has been the situation for why you haven’t leased up homeless families and how this program could change that would help.

Thank you!
