Please pass House Bill 1655 into law.
Under the current law, landlords can't charge tenants late fees before 30 days. This basically makes late fees illegal. A responsible landlord would have their tenant in court by then. Massachusetts law gives landlords no tools to encourage prompt payment short of eviction. Our law does not align with best practice in other states. Our late fee law is twice as strict as the next nearest state, Maine, which waits only 15 days.
House Bill 1655 is a great step toward bringing our housing laws into alignment with best practice in other states. Please make it law.
Thank you and keep up the good work.
