Statewide Hearing Tue May 9th: Eviction Sealing, Eminent Domain
.Volunteers and staff will be gathered at the State House to support and oppose various bills:
- Oppose H.1690 S.956 An Act promoting housing opportunity and mobility through eviction sealing (HOMES) aka Eviction Sealing
- Oppose H.1682 S.1048 An Act relative to summary process and rental assistance
- Support H.1763 An Act maintaining parity in legal services for small property owners
- Support H.1593 An Act relative to the defense of private property rights through the prevention of abusive eminent domain takings in the Commonwealth
Fair warning: democracy is difficult! Please prepare to wait a long time to speak. Elected officials have in the past let other officials and invited guests speak first. Bring a closed bottle of water in case you need it. Expect to sit or stand for a period of time. Remember all visitors to the State House pass through security. You must sign in to speak. Speaking is not required. If not speaking, please check in with MassLandlords for a sign to hold.
We typically try to thank participating members with one or two meals, depending on hearing timing and amount. See below for details.
Attendees will make a positive difference for property rights in Massachusetts!
We need landlords, owners, property manages and others to inform our legislature what it's like to do our job. It's not easy! Some bills would be really harmful if allowed to pass into law. Others would be helpful! Help the legislature know which ideas are ready and which are not.
Testimony and in-person attendance will be coordinated by Doug Quattrochi, Executive Director, MassLandlords, Inc. Doug was a founding member of MassLandlords in 2013. He became the association's first Executive Director under new bylaws in 2014. Since then, he has scaled the organization from a core of 160 members in Worcester to approximately 2,500 dues paying businesses from Pittsfield to the Cape, and from an all-volunteer team to approximately 20 full and part-time staff plus 50 volunteers. Doug has been instrumental in advancing democratic governance mechanisms, including score voting for policy priorities and a staggered and democratically elected Board of Directors.
