"I have three buildings which were financed by Masslandlords members I met at events. They are all holding first position mortgages with great rates and a small down payment. The connections I have made over the years have literally been priceless."
Russell Sabadosa, East Longmeadow

Good News Emergency: Short Virtual Meeting Tue Jun 28: Civil Asset Forfeiture Bill Headed for Vote

    6:00 PM-7:00 PM

A bill MassLandlords filed may be headed to a floor vote! We’re asking members to support it. S.2944 “An Act relative to forfeiture reform” would dramatically improve private property rights for both landlords and renters alike.

Massachusetts currently ranks worst in the country for the ease with which a town or city can take property from people who have not been accused of any crime. For example, the owner of a motel in Tewksbury fought for ten years to keep his motel, which federal authorities said was used by his renters to engage in drug-related activities. The owner was not accused of any crime, yet his property was seized anyway.

According to public records, Massachusetts takes roughly $7 million per year from private people not accused of any crime. Half of all cases involved less than $5,000 in assets, meaning civil asset forfeiture mostly affects people with few assets who are likely our renters. Imagine your renter lends their car to a cousin who then commits a crime with the car. Your renter was not accused of the crime, but they lost their car anyway.

At this event we will show how civil asset forfeiture causes innocent people to lose their property. We will review actual bill text and the ways members can support property rights by supporting this bill.

This presentation will be given by Doug Quattrochi, Executive
Director, MassLandlords, Inc. Doug was a founding member of MassLandlords in 2013. He became the association’s first Executive Director under new bylaws in 2014. Since then, he has scaled the organization from a core of 160 members in Worcester to approximately 2,500 dues paying businesses from Pittsfield to the Cape, and from an all-volunteer team to approximately 20 full and part-time staff plus 50 volunteers. Doug has been instrumental in advancing democratic governance mechanisms, including score voting for policy priorities and a staggered and democratically elected Board of Directors. Doug also oversees the RentHelper spin-off, which is expanding access to electronic banking for those of us who are unbanked or underbanked. Prior to MassLandlords, Doug held leadership roles in various Massachusetts startups, two of which are still operating. Doug holds a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Doug’s presentation was excellent. He was very clear and provided detailed explanations.” -Larry

“Doug always holds very informative classes full of substance and Very organized!” -Thomas

“Your answers to member’s questions were most helpful.” -Liz
