Statewide Virtual Meeting Monday November 28th: Flood Risk and the Climate Resilient Capital Task Force

View Calendar

At this event we'll have a conversation and take feedback for the Climate Resilient Capital Task Force, a bill to be filed in the 193rd legislative session. We will review some alarming facts and our proposal to compensate:

  • Sea level rise is accelerating. NOAA predicts sea level will rise 10 - 12 inches in the next 30 years, as much as over the last 100 years (2022 Sea Level Rise Technical Report).
  • On top of this, storm surge will cause "moderate" flooding 10x more frequently than we've ever seen (NOAA).
  • On top of this, the IPCC shows rainfall will become 15% more intense, twice as often (Climate Change 2021 The Physical Science Basis Summary for Policymakers).
  • Back Bay basement condos and other properties already have a 98% chance of 12 inches of water in them in the next five years (First Street Foundation).

Attendees will leave having heard our proposal for the Climate Resilient Capital Task Force. We will be taking feedback on how to advance the interests of renters and real estate owners in coastal areas.

Water levels completely submerge most of Cambridge, all of Back Bay Boston, two-thirds of Eastie and the Seaport.
The official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration "Sea Level Rise Viewer" falls four feet short of actual storm surge from Hurricane Sandy, which was 14 feet when it hit New York in 2012. Even at ten feet of storm surge, Boston's infrastructure and access to the capital are swamped. Public Domain

This presentation will be given by Doug Quattrochi, Executive Director, MassLandlords, Inc. Doug was a founding member of MassLandlords in 2013. Doug has been instrumental in advancing democratic governance mechanisms, including score voting for policy priorities and a staggered and democratically elected Board of Directors. Doug also oversees the RentHelper spin-off, which is expanding access to electronic banking for those of us who are unbanked or underbanked. Prior to MassLandlords, Doug held leadership roles in various Massachusetts startups, two of which are still operating.
