Deleading in Massachusetts. What You Need to Know.
Do I HAVE to Delead My Rental?
- Was your building built before 1978?
- Do you have a child under age 6 living there?
- Have families with children under 6 ever applied for this rental before?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then yes, you should already have deleaded certification.

We've Already Saved You Money!
That’s right! In 2023, MassLandlords lobbied the state legislature to increase the tax credit for deleading a home.
As a result, the deleading tax credit was doubled, a long-overdue increase. If you’re a landlord needing to delead your rental, you will now receive twice as much in tax breaks per unit.
At MassLandlords, we are always looking out for the interests of housing providers.
In addition to a state tax credit, there are several state and federal loan programs available for deleading small (1–4 units) multifamily buildings.

We doubled the Massachusetts Schedule LP tax credit for deleading up to $3,000 per unit. That’s more money in your pocket thanks to MassLandlords! What else have you missed?
Why is Deleading such a High Priority?
- Lead poisoning is a serious hazard for children.
- Young children exposed to lead, even small amounts, may experience debilitating health effects, long-term or permanent damage, learning difficulties, lower lifetime earnings, higher likelihood of crime, and other bad outcomes.
- Massachusetts has made deleading progress, but we still have tens of thousands of homes and rentals with lead. (Somewhere around 10% of homes have been deleaded from among the state’s 2 million+ homes built before 1978.)
Don’t get caught in noncompliance with Massachusetts lead law. The consequences can be costly for you, and deadly for your tenants.

Don't go bankrupt from a lead lawsuit like these people.
